Learning touch typing was the first time I watched 1% a day actually compound into something. Five minutes every morning, for a little over a month, and I’d rewired how I type without even trying hard.

It’s really three stages: learn the keys, drill the ones you’re bad at, then just keep it sharp.

  1. First is to learn the basics. typingclub.com had excellent courses to learn the home row, and proper fingers for all letters, numbers, and symbols. You can even learn one hand typing!
  2. Next is to drill your weak spots. keybr.com watches where you keep slipping and feeds you more of exactly those letters, so you stop avoiding your bad keys and start fixing them.
  3. Last is to keep it sharp. monkeytype.com is more of a stat keeper. A place to test yourself now and then, watch your WPM climb, and show off to friends.

And when you want it to feel like a game, typeracer.com drops you into live races against friends and strangers on the internet.

If you are already on monkeytype, or you end up there, come friend me.
